I originally created this blog to document my work on the family history of my grandmother, Maggie Goodfellow Story, later known as Madge Rogers. She was from Bewcastle. After it became evident that other family historians were attracted to the site, I invited them to share their memories and family histories from Bewcastle and the surrounding parishes. And so, it is evolving into a useful research tool for genealogists. Please note, if you want to read my original work, you will need to scroll down to the beginning of the blog and continue reading up.

If you have information that you would like to share here, or a question, you need to become a blog author and make a posting. To do this, contact me at rosemarydale3@yahoo.co.uk, and I will send you a permission. However, I can not respond to requests for further information or assistance.

Family History Vl

Here is a picture of both Thomas Story and his wife, Elizabeth. Also a poem written to honour the memory of Thomas. This is a page from the Bewcastle Journal, volume 19, March 2004. (Click on it to enlarge.)

Thomas Story

Thomas was born in 1855, the eldest child of Robert and Elizabeth. In the U.K. census of 1881 Thomas was 26, unmarried and was the head of household at Shawhead Cottage. He was a mason, living with his 21 year old brother Robert and his 18 year old brother Christopher. (See Family History V for a picture of these brothers.) They also were masons. Their father, Robert, was living at Shawhead at this time. Shawhead and Shawhead Cottage were two houses directly across the road from each other. Shawhead can be found on the map of the farms and dwellings of Bewcastle.

On September 29, 1883 Thomas married Elizabeth Goodfellow of Whintingston. They lived at Shawhead. Their family was as follows:

Elizabeth born 1884 at Shawhead

Mary Jane known as Cissie born 1885 at Shawhead

William born 1887 at Shawhead

Annie born 1888 at Shawhead

Robert born 1891 at Shawhead

Kate born 1894 at Shawhead, died aged 7 months and buried at Bewcastle, May 5, 1894

Thomas born 1895 at Shawhead, died aged 6 months and buried at Bewcastle, October 21, 1895

Maggie born 1897 at Shawhead, our grandmother

Thomasina born 1898 at Shawhead

In the next post, I'll give information on Grandma's brothers and sisters.

Thomas was buried at Bewcastle on March 9, 1898 aged 44 years. His wife was buried at Bewcastle on May 6, 1908, aged 47 years.
